Aishwarya surpasses J.P Dutta's expectations

J.P Dutta is known for making films that he's passionate about. Be it BORDER, REFUGEE, LOC KARGIL, BATWARA, HATHYAR etc. Though his films are male-oriented, the prolific director has always portrayed women in a dignified manner. He has innate respect for women. He has never used women in a cheap manner merely to woo the audience and his magnum opus UMRAO JAAN also endorses this fact. It's about the young Amiran who was sold into flesh trade at a very tender age of 9 years.

He is more than happy with Aishwarya Rai's performance and cannot stop raving about her. Her role is not that of a sensuous courtesan but he has sensitively depicted the story of a young girl who is a victim of the flesh trade. He was looking for someone who'd bring alive Amiran's character and his search ended with the beautiful Aishwarya Rai. He said that Aishwarya had that enchanting and enigmatic quality and she has surpassed all his expectations.

What makes UMRAO JAAN intriguing is the fact that several generations and filmmakers have tried to recreate the magic of UMRAO JAAN, (his being the 4th film). J.P is a stickler for perfection, which reflects in all his films. He used to brief his wife Bindya and designer Anna about the minutest details regarding costumes and colour coordination etc. The colour of the costumes, the fabric etc everything had to be just perfect. The colours used are completely in harmony with the surroundings. The entire look of the film is magnificent, the costumes are elegant and those who've heard the music are completely smitten by it. The music is very melodious and soulful. It infact marks the return of melody in music. Something the audience has not witnessed since a long time.

Umrao Jaan is not a remake but an adaptation

Isn't Aishwarya Rai looking simply stunning in this still from JP Dutta's magnanimous opus Umrao Jaan.

While the general notion is that JP Dutta's film is remake of Muzzaffar Ali's 1981 film by the same name starring Rekha, the fact is not entirely true. Rather than a remake, JP Dutta's film is an adaptation.

Mirza Muhammad Hadi Ruswa had originally written the novel by the title of UMRA-O-JAAN-E-ADA in the 19th century. This novel is one of the foremost literatures in Urdu and was published in the year 1899 by Mahadeo Prasad, Publishers of Lucknow.

Ever since then the novel has a quality that has inspired many generations of film-makers to recreate the enigmatic character of Umrao Jaan. And interestingly neither Muzzaffar Ali's nor JP Dutta's version is the first cinematic adaptation of the classic literature. Other films already made on the novel include Zindagi Aur Toofan and Mehendi.

More interestingly even before these films, someone else had started making a film on this novel. And the person was none other than OP Dutta, father of JP Dutta. In the 50's, O.P.Dutta was the first person to start a film on Umrao Jaan starring the then popular actress Nimmi. Unfortunately that film could not be completed.

So in a way by making this film J P Dutta has lived his father's dream.

Ash’s ‘Salaam’ This Sunday

Ash may be looking hot in the promos of ‘Dhoom 2’ but the film that she is banking on in a big way is J P Dutta’s ‘Umrao Jaan’ an adaptation of the famous Urdu Novel by Rusva. Obviously the comparisons with Rekha will be there for she has already immortalized Umrao in Muzaffar Ali’s Magnum Opus. And the first biggest test is this Sunday when the first song ‘Salaam’ from the music album of new ‘Umrao Jaan’ will start airing on the small screen.

It has been confirmed that ‘Umrao Jaan’ is all set to release on November 13th and it shall be avoiding the collision course with ‘Don’ and ‘Jaanemann’. Khayyam’s music in the first version is the stuff of classics. It remains to be seen how good Anu Malik’s score is. What’s your take….Who makes a better Umrao….Ash or Rekha? Do send in your feedback to us….

Aishwarya Rai to promote 'Provoked' in London

Aishwarya Rai ’s much awaited film Provoked is ready to hit the theatres soon.

Before the film’s release, Ash will go to London in the third week of September to promote the movie. She is expected there on Sept 18 to address the British media and answer questions relating to the movie and her role in it.

‘Provoked’, directed by Jagmohan Mundhra , is the true story of a Punjabi woman, Kiranjit Ahluwalia, who faced physical, sexual and mental abuse at the hands of her husband for ten years. After years of suffering, she eventually killed her husband and then was sent to jail. While Kiranjit was behind bars serving her sentence, a group of social workers called the Southhall Black Sisters organized rallies and protests following which the British judicial system reprieved Kiranjit’s punishment.

Aishwarya is keen to rope in the real Kiranjit Ahluwalia for the movie’s promotion. Kiranjit accompanied the film’s crew at its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May this year.

Ash has often been criticized in the media for being reluctant to promote her films. She hardly took out enough time to promote her last release Mistress Of Spices , which bombed big time at the box-office.

However, producer J. Murli Manohar says he is very happy that Ash will be coming to London to promote ‘Provoked’. He also confirms that Ash will dub for the movie’s Hindi version. The Tamil and Telugu versions would be dubbed by other artists.

However, before leaving for England to promote the film, Ash will be busy in her other assignments. She will shoot a song with Hrithik Roshan for Dhoom 2 . She will also shoot an ad campaign in Barcelona.

Aishwarya stops Dubai's traffic

Dubai came to a standstill when Bollywood superstar Aishwarya Rai was shooting for an advertisement film of a well-known soap brand.

Dubai traffic went out of gear as shooting caused serious traffic snarls on the Emirate's major arterial road Sheikh Zayed Road yesterday during the day-long shoot for Lux International.

The shooting scene involved a group of young boys and girls dancing through the streets as Rai walked past them wearing a floral frock flashing a smile.

Large groups of fans and onlookers gathered to catch a glimpse of the actress who was totally relaxed when the camera rolled while angry motorists blared their horns.

Bollywood Director Rohan Sippy, who directed the ad film, said an international crew handled the entire project.

Rai's 'global appeal' made her the obvious choice for the project, said the organisers.

'Dhoom 2' director full of praise for Aishwarya Rai

That the gorgeous Aishwarya Rai was asked to lose some weight by the makers of Dhoom 2 is old news.

The dedicated and committed professional that she is, Ash not only lost that extra weight, but also toned up her body.

And if that was not enough, Ash’s breathtaking stunts, some along with Hrithik Roshan , has director Sanjay Gadhvi rooting for her.

According to Gadhvi, Ash made acrobatic assertions during the making of ‘Dhoom 2’ and trained for months for the action sequences in the film.

Gadhvi told a newspaper recently, “Ash has a lot of guts. She has done some awesome stunts in the film. She did power yoga for two months and has a perfectly toned body.”

The sequel of Dhoom , ‘Dhoom 2’ has Ash and Hrithik playing thieves chased by cops played by Abhishek Bachchan and Bipasha Basu , aided by Uday Chopra .

The movie, filmed in Namibia, South Africa and India is scheduled to release on November 24, 2006.
