Dhoom 2 Advance Booking is a Record

align=justify>“The entire weekend for ‘Dhoom 2’was sold out on Tuesday itself. Only five tickets are left for a Sunday eleven o clock night show which I plan to watch with my friends,” says Shonali Shrofff of Fame Group of Multiplexes. “It is undoubtedly the biggest advance booking of the year,” she added. The recent trend of advance booking starting on the Sunday instead of Wednesday has seen an unprecedented response in case of big films like ‘Fanaa’, ‘Krrish’, ‘Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna’ and ‘Don’. But if Shonali Shroff is to be believed then ‘Dhoom 2’ has broken all earlier records.

Girish S Wankhede, Manager Public Relations for Cinemax Group of Multiplexes emphatically states that all shows are totally house full. “The advance booking is tremendous,” he says. Devang Sampat, GM, Marketing and Sales, Cinemax says that the reason for such opening is the trust people have in “Mr Perfectionist” Aditya Chopra. “Moreover the starcast is such that it can’t get bigger than this,” he added.

Yashraj Films had started the trend with ‘Fanaa’ of getting a higher chunk of the ticket sales figures from the multiplexes. Vinod Chopra successfully adapted the same module with ‘Lage Raho Munnabhai’. There have been rumours that Yashraj Films once again tried to get a bigger share of the pie from the multplexes before the release of ‘Dhoom 2’ but it hasn’t been verified as no one is willing to talk. This correspondent had spoken to Shonali Shroff of Fame Multiplexes a day before ‘Fanaa’ was about to be released. She had said then that Fame is still not sure about releasing ‘Fanaa’ due to the prevailing uncertainty on revenue sharing. But on being asked today if a similar situation arose with ‘Dhoom 2’ she was prompt in saying, “We have very good relations with Yashraj Films. There’s no problem at all.”

‘Dhoom 2’ is also setting another record in terms of number of screens showing the same film in a particular multiplex. You can imagine how big a release it is by the following numbers:

Fame Adlabs, Andheri: 18 shows per day

Fame Malad: 21 shows per day

Fame Kandivali: 14 shows per day

Cinemax, Versova: 20 shows

Cinemax, Sion: 8 shows

Cinemax Kandivali: 12 shows

Cinemax Mira Road: 9 shows

Cinemax Wondermall, Thane: 12 shows

Cinemax Eternity Mall: 13 shows

Cinemax, Andheri single screen: 4 shows

Cinemax Nasik: 9 shows

In a year that has seen huge money spinners like ‘Lage Raho Munnabhai’, ‘Krrish’, ‘Fanaa’ and ‘Rang De Basanti’, there’s every possibility that ‘Dhoom 2’ shall be the icing on the cake of a great year for the Hindi Film Industry. Stay tuned to IndiaGlitz for the ‘Dhoom 2’ review first thing tomorrow and a video of the public opinion this weekend.

Shooting for Dhoom 2 was like a college trip - Ash

We hear you are playing a negative role in Dhoom 2, what was it like and what was the rationale behind taking on this role with negative shades.

Firstly all the talk on a lot of aspects of Dhoom and my character in the film. I guess assumptions are fine, because it definitely keeps the curiosity picking and the audience out there wondering, how much truth there is to it, so I am wondering whether at this point in time I should shed more light or let the audience go discover for themselves in the theatres. Speculation has been aplenty right from the time we starting filming, so it’s all a lot of assumptions. Slating or slotting the characters already I don’t think should be done, because I will not define my character as negative or positive for that matter because she’s a live wire in the film and with a character that’s just typically her, when you discover Sunehri you will find that she’s just a singular individual, it will take you a while to even figure her out and that was the idea in the way we agreed that I perform her, where you will not be able to slot her, she completely throws you. It was definitely exciting for me to discover and deliver Sunehri simply because in a given scene, while having relatively regular pieces of conversation within that its layered, in a single moment she’s striking a conversation, in a single moment she exudes excitement, almost hero worship to Mr A, in the next second she’s turning on an attitude and challenging him, almost reckoning to be an equal, so in that sense, just like Mr A takes the audience a while to figure out, so does Sunehri. So thereby when I say performing Sunehri was defined in my mind, this is what I mean by etching her out, that there were so many little little aspects that it felt very important in creating her in terms of content apart from of course the visual impact and that is something all the characters we all definitely focused on, as something we brought to the table as a team from director down to the stylist.

Did you do your stunts yourself? What was it like?

A couple of them, as would go with an action film and with safety first being the mantra always in every film set and that isn’t anything new, its common knowledge, within the film fraternity as well as the audience. But nevertheless a lot of the work was something that we as a team of actors and technicians did push ourselves for, to experience the adrenaline rush first person because that’s what makes it super exciting in terms of what you deliver and also in terms of what the audience gets to actually experience on screen when they see the artist/ actor in person, pushing themselves beyond the norm. The high point probably was actually at Orabi Gorge, where we had the jump, there’s this one moment where Hrithik’s character Aryan challenges Sunehri, (that’s me) in the film to jump, given the premise of the scene which when you see you will enjoy it, and she takes a beat and goes for it and so does he and you see a glimpse of that in the promos. That was a trip, it was an absolute high, and never in my life have I experienced just literally jumping off the edge, I had to actually do that, of course they looked after our safety, and there is a bungee that we are connected to in person as well, even in the moment on screen, but to actually do this literally just jumping straight foot first like off a diving board, was fantastic. Even when you are actually hauled up, just after a take, when you’ve spent it out there, it was, quite a moment for both Hrithik and me, because just next us, there was a trickle of a waterfall so we were actually seeing the water drops just literally going down in reality what visually we refer to as slow motion, literally the drops were going down forever.

This is your first film with Hrithik and Bipasha, how was the experience of working with them?

Superlative, I mean it really has been fantastic, fun just like the rest of the team, be it Abhishek, Uday, I think the fact that the 3 of them have known each other since childhood, they constantly share their anecdotes which just make you feel that you belong to those bunch of kids who went to those Birthday parties, or hung out in their schooling years, you just felt that you were part of the inner circle, because it was so wonderful to see them spontaneously and at the most unexpected moments, have a recollection and relive it, made you feel you were there as well and the brief moments that I got to share with Bipasha, I must say she’s a real cool girl, and I am glad we are a team on this film, all of us, because the camaraderie was genuine, the spirit was fab and the energy was about being team players, and that’s something that everybody brought to the table very professionally while on the job and aside it just kept the energy what it should be, on a film like this, very naturally. So we had a blast while making the film, solely zeroing on my specific co-star for the film, that is my pair that’s Hrithik, like he himself was saying that its great that he also had eased up a lot and he says that generally, not just from this film, we had a world tour and a commercial together and I guess both of us had been psyched by perception about being extremely professional, being very detailed, almost obsessive about our work, each of us had been told that about the other, but when we have worked together, I can safely say that, I think that’s a given. In any committed passionate professional would be that detailed for what they bring to the job, and I relate to that, so I don’t think there’s any need to make much ado about it. It’s fairly natural to work that hard or be that much of a perfectionist on the job.

What do you think of the music of Dhoom 2 as compared to Dhoom?

I would never make comparisons, because the fact is that Dhoom was a super success and it was a signature tune at that point in time, in every club, car, bikes, a raging success, and I am glad that Dhoom 2 was received with equal if not more responsive. It has been superlative again and very very positive, and I think it was very clever, to have the first promo go on air with KANK, it was very gratifying for the whole team to have received such a tremendous response, where the audience was already in Dhoom 2 while watching the movie! This is something we heard in first person, we all received it on text and as a team we were overjoyed. It was very very good to know that people were so looking forward to this film, with so much anticipation, we’ve had a blast making it, so we can’t wait to share it with our audiences.

Did you watch Dhoom and what did you think of the film?

It’s evident that because at that point it was definitely a cluster breaker. The identity is youth but I take it as just going by the success, they become family experiences that kids enjoy, parents go the entire family goes and they just have a good time, and you come away with an adrenaline rush. I sincerely believe that age is a state of the mind, even 20 years later I will say this. And everybody has been there done that or has aspired to be there do that and have all these experiences in person, if not, cinema is the perfect dream world, the closest thing to experiencing any moment in person. So it was good to know that Dhoom was well embraced, so when approached with the idea of Dhoom 2 touted as a sequel, but I always call it yet it is a brilliant idea, and Adi knew what he was doing when he came up with this idea, going by the response. We were very very happy to be on team, its really funny, how 20,000 ideas fly around within the team of course, about the next Dhoom and the next Dhoom, and the next Dhoom, so it obviously a very clever franchise. At the end of the day it’s a fab experience for the team as well as for the audiences. It’s like college will always be an experience everybody cherishes and the pulse and pace of this movie, is one that is universally enjoyed.

You have so many releases coming up, what makes Dhoom 2 special?

It’s definitely a first in my career and it’s interesting it’s happened in the 10th year of my film career. Of course that’s by choice, its not a moment if I may say so, a moment I have been waiting for to happen to me, in the sense that there have been offers to do roles in the western mode but I have been very choosy, very evident in the choice of films that I have done and made so far. This was a tough offer to resist, because I thought it was perfect, if this was what I wanted to bring on board, this was the perfect premise to do so. So in terms of playing an out and out westernized character, so obviously youth oriented and trendsetting, so obviously fashionable and fun, but at the same time racy, evidently hot and super cool, this was the perfect premise to do so, so yes I chose to project the way I never have before on this film, because I felt it seemed so natural and at ease and it went with the language of the film. If you do find Sunehri sexy at every given point, Sunehri just is, she isn’t someone who is working to turn it on in every frame, unless she needs to as a character, while interacting with another character. So I thought it was great where, wearing shorts or short skirts, dressing a certain way was just natural to the character, it wasn’t about trying to work it on celluloid. I don’t need to resort to tactics, to get attention, thank you very much, I have more than my fair share of it even in my saris! It’s not something I needed to explore for the sake of the apparent, it was a definite character created, and it’s just the language of the entire film and of all the characters. We have shot in Rio, where it was only natural to be dressed a certain way, we have shot in South Africa, yes also in Mumbai, but while interacting with the characters it’s all a natural progression of the celluloid theme. Hence the comfort level.

What was the best moment during the course of shooting the film?

The film as a whole, but like I say apart from the part of the absolute thrill of working on celluloid, I must confess, I thoroughly enjoyed the team, I enjoyed the gang, off-screen as well, because like I just shared with you earlier, that it was so nice that everybody was just being, it was the whole team. There were a lot of laughs, a lot of fun. There has been a lot of talk about the fitness regime, something that I only explored very honestly for a month to 5 weeks before we started the film, then it has only been my schedules throughout the last year, my different films I ‘ve been working on, I didn’t get a chance really focus on the fitness. So for all the talk in the media, this is the truth, it was just 4-5 weeks last year before we started. Then after making Guru, both Abhishek and me had to put on weight for Mani’s film, so we resumed the schedule, I suggested we take Deepika ( the fitness instructor) with us because we were doing the action part of the film, and whatever little bit we could do, which was barely 2 weeks, while filming, but the fun part was that everybody would be in the gym, I mean everybody not just the actors. And it was fun because while we would all try to get into a bit of a routine, I think we were just having so much fun hanging around, that we’d be just about that sincere and then the next plan to go out to dinner, which we would all do very happily and try and hold on to the myths that if I gorge now it will show 20 days later, so that we are on safe turf, it was like a college /road trip, I’d say this film, where while we were working in all sincerity but it was all so much fun, on set and after hours. I think that is by far the best memory the best is everything about D2 is fabulous while making it, but I think we’ve come away being really good friends, time and tide will be able to define the strength of the friendship but nevertheless it definitely went beyond being co-stars, and its something that I really cherish and hold dear to my heart.

How did you enjoy shooting on location in South Africa and a message for your fans there?

South Africa incidentally has a home turf kind of significance in my life, because yes, I did win my title in Sun City of Johannesburg, and I have been there a couple of times, not that often, but a couple of times, my work took me back there, to Cape Town to film Dil Ka Rishta extensively which was again a family experience, so my memories are very very warm, and people have been extremely loving and its something that a lot of my film fraternity really cherish and enjoy with the people of South Africa. Even the year I was giving up the title, when Amitji was on board the panel of the jury, at the pageant, it was overwhelming to see the strength with which our people had descended to Sun City and the applause that he was rendered just took the entire pageant’s breath away because it was so good to see, and such an awakening to the rest of the world to recognize, how passionate our people are about our cinema, and the members of our film fraternity, and the love that they are so generous with. Hence I personally share a very warm bond with our audience out there and I can just extend a heartfelt thank you, for their love and blessings and good wishes all through my career and it was great fun now coming back there and shooting for Dhoom 2, a fun experience for us and again with a lot of very fond memories, I am glad that every time I have come there and worked or filmed, or participated in a pageant, I have come away with super success and a lot of love and great memories, so I guess that’s a good sign.

Did you do any kind of special preparation for this role?

Like I said one was the visual was very imperative, as a pre-requisite, its something we as a team agreed we definitely would work on, as I do work on every film, here it zeroed in on the physical appearance in terms of fitness, and it was a body language and a body type that I hadn’t brought to celluloid before, and since I was going to dress a certain way, I needed to just be the person who wore those clothes, very naturally and not because it was an element of worked on excitement, I am glad that it has turned out exciting, that wasn’t the reason for the costume. People who have well toned bodies as we look around, naturally dress a certain way, when you’ve really worked on your midriff you see that they are happy to wear shorter tops, when you have worked on your legs, they naturally wear short skirts, not because they need to show their legs but they feel natural and comfortable in it. So that was a body type that I was determined to work on, and I was very glad to discover that the first time in my life that I have got down to working out, my body responds very quickly and its very reassuring to know that, so with a little bit of focused time and work it was good to know that we can achieve it, and bring that on board. In terms of the styling, working with Anaita, whom I worked with several times in my career specially in my modeling world, or in the fashion magazine assignments, we’ve worked many times before, so she knows me, my body type, my aesthetics, my comfort, and so we worked on it together very easily and she’s done a fantastic job, because that’s what again people right from on the set and now the audience have begun to identify. The clothing feels like me, it feels natural even if it means seeing me for the first time in the western mould. It doesn’t seem uncomfortable, it doesn’t seem unnatural, and that’s something Anaita knows about me, so we worked on it together and arrived at Sunehri. We decided that we would go with a different hand in terms of makeup and hair styling because that again would bring a newness to board, so I worked with Subbu who also I have known from my advertising, and modeling experience, though this was the first film we were working on together. So we did one day of a look shoot as in a test with my dear friend Farooque and once we arrived at Sunehri, there she was bang on ready to go on set. Obviously the final verdict is the nod from Adi, it was fun to arrive at her in terms of the visual. In terms of preparation to characterization, we were clear again as a team as I said before that we would create a character, while we knew that the visual would be the initial head turner, we needed to create someone who would be, specifically a character from this franchise.
Also it has worked out really well, fortunately or coincidentally that currently I am having so many different releases, Umrao Jaan, Dhoom 2 and Guru, and ahead there’s Provoked and Last Legion, it’s great that not only visually we have arrived at a specific character, but also in terms of her mannerisms her personality is very very specific and can be identified as someone who belongs solely to this film.

What next? Can we expect to see you doing some more action films in the international front?

Well I started in fact just pre Dhoom 2 I made Last Legion, which was definitely action not contemporary though and I experienced sword fighting and I am a warrior in that film, so I completed that movie before I started Dhoom, so that would technically be my first experience in the action genre, but it wasn’t in the contemporary times, so I am glad that within the year, between last year and now, I have actually got through and tasted action spectrum in Roman times and contemporary biker times and its been a lot of fun, its been a huge adrenaline rush, exactly what I was looking forward to and like I tease I have tasted blood, I can’t wait to have more such experiences because they are really fulfilling and it’s a rush that can’t be explained, but it’s a definite high, that’s the most fantastic part of our job, because we get to experience which probably people just think or dream about, and irrespective of what point in time of your life, to what space you are physically in, where you are, it could from the ridiculous to the superlative in excitement, but the fact is we get to experience life through our film making and I think that’s a blessing.

So, it’s bound to make news when a parcel containing 23, 000 Euros (Approximately Rs 14 lakhs) weighing 16.5 kgs is addressed to her name and address by an unknown person from South Africa.

The customs officials had notified regarding this parcel to Rai but she didn’t revert back to their repeated notifications through letters. Ash is currently shooting for Ashutosh Gowarikar’s ‘Akbar Jodha’ in Jaipur and the customs officials have clearly stated to her manager Haris Singh that they can’t wait for her beyond the end of this week after which she would have to be summoned under the Customs Act.

According to the customs officials she was not under investigation but if she continues to be non-cooperative with the investigations then she could face action under the Customs Act. The consignor is the one who is really answerable and can be questioned even if he is a Non-Indian. Film industry sources are saying that it might be an act of a fan who was eager to prove his loyalty towards the beautiful former Miss World. Well…What can we say…There are other better ways of showing your affection-n-loyalty dude.

Umrao Jaan back in a new avatar

Now here we see Aishwarya Rai in a completely contrasting look from what she did in Umrao Jaan. No heavy make-up or the golden clothes, Ash has gone from glam to plain simple in her forthcoming film Guru.

If you remember in early images of Guru, we saw an aged Aishwarya and Abhishek Bachchan. Here we see her sporting simple jewelry with a black top and black dupatta. Well, Umrao Jaan didn’t do the trick. Let’s hope Guru will!!

Aishwarya turns 33 this week

She rules the hearts of millions and is touted as one of the most beautiful actresses ever to grace Indian cinema. Aishwarya Rai, who turns 33 Wednesday, returns to the marquee after a long hiatus - playing a courtesan in "Umrao Jaan" and an oomph girl in "Dhoom 2".

The actress, who is said to be dating Abhishek Bachchan, will reportedly announce her engagement on her birthday. According to insiders, Abhishek's ailing grandmother Teji Bachchan is eager to see him married, and the couple is said to be planning to tie the knot early next year.

But Aishwarya, who is apparently attending family dinners and get-togethers at the Bachchan household, is tight-lipped about her relationship.

She is currently busy promoting her two films. In Yash Raj Films' upcoming "Dhoom 2", Aishwarya plays a hi-tech thief along with Hrithik Roshan, while in J.P. Dutta's "Umrao Jaan", a screen adaptation of Mirza Mohammed Haadi Ruswa's Urdu novel "Umrao Jaan Ada" and a tragic historical, she plays a courtesan.

"When Dutta narrated the script to me, I told him that if you get Aishwarya to play the role of Umrao Jaan only then make the film, else drop it. According to me, the character requires an enigmatic quality to it. This is what I feel Aishwarya's personality symbolises," said well-known lyricist Javed Akhtar on the actress.

"Hers is a personality that is a kind of riddle. Even Dutta felt the same way and now after watching the finished product I feel that no one else could have made it."

However, there is a notion among some that she is not a good actress and has hogged the limelight mainly for her looks, and her affairs with co-stars Salman Khan and Viveik Oberoi.

"Aishwarya is not known as a bankable actor. People think of her as wooden. She can't emote. Dutta is not only a good director; he is also a good technician. He knows how to extract work from his artist. We are confident that Aishwarya must have played the role convincingly," New Delhi-based distributor Sanjay Mehta told IANS.

"Umrao Jaan" and "Dhoom 2" will put to test her versatility. Critics believe that so far only Sanjay Leela Bhansali has been able to extract the best out of her in his hit "Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam" and "Devdas", India's official entry for the Oscars in 2003.

Her being crowned Miss World in 1994 made her entry into films smooth. She was flooded with offers but chose to start her acting career with Mani Ratnam's Tamil film "Iruvar".

Her performance was critically appreciated and she soon forayed into Bollywood with Rahul Rawail's "Aur Pyar Ho Gaya" opposite Bobby Deol. The film not only fetched her a Filmfare award for best debut but she had top-notch directors making a beeline for her house.

She was soon signed up by one of the most talented filmmakers in the industry, Bhansali, for "Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam". In this love triangle, which also had Ajay Devgan, she was paired for the first time with Salman Khan.

Their onscreen chemistry was electrifying and the film was widely appreciated and fetched her Filmfare's best actress award.

She started receiving offers from some of the biggest names in the industry - Subhash Ghai, Yash Chopra and Mansoor Khan.

Chopra signed her up with Shah Rukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan in "Mohabattein". The film didn't do well but the audience liked her pairing with Shah Rukh. Bhansali cast the two in his magnum opus "Devdas" that went on to become a major hit.

Post-"Devdas" Aishwarya shifted her focus to Hollywood. Her first international venture was Gurinder Chadha's "Bride & Prejudice". The film was a flop but it didn't stop her from getting new projects.

Some of her prestigious international projects include - "Provoked", "The Last Legion" opposite Colin Firth and Sir Ben Kingsley and "Chaos".

While scaling new heights in Bollywood and international films, Aishwarya never crossed the line in terms of skin show on screen.

"I am not comfortable about kissing or nudity. I am clear about what I want. I'll work only with good directors who'll offer me two-dimensional roles. The director and the role are most important.

"Women in the industry have been exploited very often but there are some actors who believe that the short cut to stardom is through nudity or exposure. Such success is, in fact, very short-lived. I have never done a kissing scene nor do I have intentions to," she is quoted as saying.

Since she set foot in filmdom, the India media has been sometimes nasty to her but she hasn't bothered much about what they thought or wrote about her.

"Someone asked me why I'm politically correct, even when people hit out so openly at me. But the truth is I've never been brought up to behave any other way. I can't say anything hurtful about anyone. I just don't believe in saying mean things. I won't feel good doing that. This is the way I am.

"I'm amazed how many people feel good hitting out at me. They're welcome to do it. Earlier, they had more leeway to deny their indiscretions in print. But now on television they look pretty ridiculous denying what they say," she has said.

Apart from promoting a wide variety of disparate brands, Aishwarya has many firsts to her credit - she has the distinction of being the first Indian actor to be a member of the jury at the Cannes Film Festival and also appeared on Oprah Winfrey's talk show.

About her appearance on Winfrey's show, she told the media: "I never thought I'd actually be meeting her -- and that too, on her show! I was extremely happy to be on her show. I admire her."

She also appeared on another prestigious American talk show "60 Minutes".

She has graced the covers of international magazines like TIME, which placed her on their list of the "100 Most Influential People in the World Today". Aishwarya has also been termed as one of the most beautiful women by TIME magazine.

Aishwarya, whose last Hindi release was "Shabd" that sank without a trace at the box office, is hoping to hit the bull's eye with "Umrao Jaan", "Dhoom 2" and Mani Rathnam's "Guru". While "Umrao Jaan" releases next Friday, "Dhoom 2" is set for a Nov 24 release and "Guru" in December.

Ash-Abhishek to marry next year

According to Kannada newspaper ‘Vijayakarnataka’, Aishwarya and Abhishek will tie the knot sometime in February, 2007 and Aishwarya will officially announce the news on her birthday, November 1.

The story was revealed to the newspaper by Bachchan family's astrologer Chandrashekhara Swamiji. According to him the year 2006 will be unlucky for the married couple and so he advised Aishwarya and Abhishek to marry in 2007.

There is, however, no official confirmation of the reported wedding. The two stars, who have been romantically linked since over an year now, have consistently refused to confirm media speculation on the issue.

Past media reports have suggested that the couple have kept their wedding plans in abeyance pending a nod from the

Bachchan family, something that has so far not been forthcoming. In the recent past Ash has made great efforts to assuage any misgivings that the Bachchan family may have harbored about her abilities as a homemaker. Her efforts at winning the hearts of the Bachchan family include a hospital visit to Abhishek's grandmother Teji Bachchan and frequent visits to the Bachchan home. Recently she and her family spent their Diwali with the Bachchans.

According to the report, Aishwarya (born in Dhanu Rashi) and Abhishek (born in Kumbha Rashi) marriage was likely to face roadblocks in 2006 problems but, from October 27, when the planetary positions change, both Ash and Abhi will have the support of Jupiter (Guru-bruhaspathi).

A horoscope match was confirmed in Nov 2005 when Amitabh's brother, Ajitabh, visited a priest in Bangalore in the company of Abhishek, at the behest of Teji Bachchan.

It is reported that the ailing Teji Bachchan is very keen to see her grandson wed.

However it still remains to be seen how much truth lies behind all these rumours. Aishwarya has always been tightlipped about the relationship while Abhishek has managed to evade the topic whenever he has confronted the issue.

Is it another publicity gimmick ahead of the release of Aishwarya and Abhishek starrer movies - Dhoom 2 & Umrao Jaan?

Jodha Akbar in trouble

Ashutosh Gowarikar 's ambitious project Jodha Akbar that stars the gorgeous Aishwarya Rai and the handsome Hrithik Roshan in the title roles, has run into trouble.

The shooting of the film that was supposed to commence in coming weeks has met with huge resistance from Kshatriya segment of society, especially those belonging to the princely states of Rajasthan.

The film has Hrithik and Ash in the roles of Akbar, the great Mughal emperor and Jodhabhai, a Hindu princess married with Akbar, respectively.

Surajmal Singh, the chief of Rajput youths in Rajasthan, has been resenting Jodhabhai's portrayal in the wrong frame her and characterization in films and TV channels in the past.

According to him, there has been a big misconception about Jodhabhai and it has been repeated many times by the entertainment and media world. He adds that there are no proofs of Jodhabhai's marriage with Akbar in historical records.

In fact, it was Pannabhai (the look alike of Jodhabhai) who was married with emperor Akbar and not Jodhabhai.

The agitated Rajputs have been asking the filmmakers to prove the relevant facts before commencing the film's shooting in Rajasthan.

These Rajputs have threatened to take legal action against the producers if they fail to abide by the historical facts about Akbar and Jodhabhai.

Ash like you have never seen before

Yash Raj films' Dhoom simply turned around the John Abraham's career yet producer Aditya decided to rope in a fresh appeal for Dhoom 2. He went ahead and roped in even bigger stars like Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai for the role of the villains.

So far this year, Ash fans in India have had to be content with seeing the Bollywood beauty on the small screen endorsing brands or gracing events such as the Cannes film festival. Rai's only film released in 2006, Provoked has still to do the rounds in India.

However, despair not. The seemingly interminable wait to see the enchanting Bollyood beauty, larger than life on the silver screen, is now nearing its end. Incidently, the wait was not because Rai had too few assignment on hand but because she had too many of them.

Speaking about the diversity of her roles in the forthcoming films Aishwarya told a TV channel, "What's nice about these three films coming up is that each character is distinctly different. So while Umrao Jaan is a courtesan a lot more ornate visually while Dhoom is very contemporary and racy...something that you have not seen me do.

The actor will soon be seen in four big ticket films in quick succession. The bonanza starts with JP Dutta's Umrao Jaan. Next in line are Yash Raj Films Dhoom 2, followed by Mani Ratnam's Guru. Finally, we will see her on 19 Jan 2007 in the $67 million Hollywood period action adventure The Last Legion, distributed by MGM.

What is interesting about Rai forthcoming films is that other than herself, nothing else is common in them. The films belong to different genres, her roles in them are diverse and the filmmakers that made them are a breed apart. All indications that Rai is now a matured actor.

Aishwarya & John have the quality

They've never been paired before. "But if you close your eyes you can see how good John Abraham and Aishwarya Rai look together," says producer Gaurang Doshi who's all set to bring together the golden couple in his new magical mystical romantic musical Happy Birthday.

To be directed by Sriram Raghavan who earlier did Ram Gopal Varma's Saif-Urmila starrer Ek Hasina Thi, Happy Birthday starts shooting in January.

Says Gaurang, "We had signed John about a year back. But we we needed a strong charismatic and popular leading lady. Because Happy Birthday isn't about just the male protagonist. When Ash said yes, everything fell into place. She has never been seen with John before. They look like Adonis and Venus together."

John is on the look-out for new leading ladies to be paired opposite. In Water he's paired with Lisa Ray, in Baabul with Rani Mukherjee and in Salaam-e-Ishq with Vidya Balan for the first time.

Says Gaurang, "The catch-line for Happy Birthday will be, 'Those Who Don't Believe In Magic Will Never Find It.' We needed a magical pair. John and Ash have the quality."

Adds John Abraham, "I think Aishwarya and I will make a good team. It's a great script. Sriram is a super-director, and we're excited."

The music score is being done by Vishal-Shekhar.

Umrao Jaan - A woman of many talents

How does one describe 'Umrao Jaan'? Story of a courtesan. An emotional journey of a girl child to a most desired woman. A tale of a highly literate person. A costume drama. Producer-director JP Dutta packs this and a lot more in his take on Mirza Hadi Ruswa's book 'Umrao Jaan Ada'.

It has been a common saying - If Lucknow was the heart of Avadh, Umrao was the heartbeat! Set in 19th century, 'Umrao Jaan' is a journey of an eight year old girl called Amiran. Hailing from a lower class family, she was a daughter of a sweeper, a 'jamadar', who was employed at 'Bahu Begum ka Makhbara' in Faizabad [now in UP]. He was a simple man with limited desires and a supporter of truth. This righteous trait of him landed him in trouble since his statement against Dilawar Khan, a criminal, changed the course of life.

Dilawar Khan was imprisoned but on return he kidnapped young Amiran and sold her to Khannum Sahib [Shabana Azmi], owner of a 'kotha' in Lucknow. Though 'kothas' have their own meaning when it comes to films, the one that we are mentioning from the era of 19th century was a hub for cultural activities. There was education, literature, poetry, styling, classical music, dance....everything that could make an individual a master in arts.

Amiran too became one such literate person and was named Umrao [Aishwarya Rai] by Khannum. She learnt everything in the confines of the kotha - living up in stlye from Bua Hussaini, education from Maulvi Sahib, music and dance from Kathak Acharya and many more skills, including poetry, from Bismillah, Khurshid and Gauhar. Also 'Ada' was her signatory name due to her proficiency over writing and presenting poetry.

Soon Umrao Jaan Ada was a name to reckon with and the entire Lucknow was bowled over by her beauty, charms and skills. Every man wanted to watch her sing and dance but Khannum's kotha was only for the elite. Also for Umrao it was only one man whose attention she desired - Nawab Sultan [Abhishek Bachchan]. A nawab who had luxury of riches at his feet, even he reciprocated to her feelings and was equally in love with her. Meanwhile Faiz Ali [Suneil Shetty], a hardened outlaw, too was in love with Umrao Jaan. Even his love was true as he cared for her in all earnest in spite of the world recognizing him as a dacoit.

Will Umrao Jaan indeed get true love? Would she be able to live a life with her Nawab forever? Will Faiz let everything go away from him so easily?

Will Umrao's dream of her own house and family be fulfilled?

Also starring Divya Dutta, Himani Shivpuri, Puru Rajkumar, Ayesha Jhulka and Kulbhushan Kharbanda in key roles, 'Umrao Jaan' boasts of a great crew in the form of dialogues by O.P. Jutta, art by Bijon Das Gupta, lyrics by Javed Akhtar and music by Anu Malik.

'Umrao Jaan' is coming to take your breath away on November 3, 2006.

Aishwarya, John abraham in Happy Birthday

Here’s a casting coup!

John Abraham and Aishwarya Rai have been teamed for the first time in Gaurang Doshi’s HAPPY BIRTHDAY, to be directed by Sriram Raghavan. Gaurang has a penchant for multi-starrers [AANKHEN and DEEWAAR] and HAPPY BIRTHDAY will have its share of stars too. While Gaurang and Sriram are in the process of finalizing one more leading lady, Paresh Rawal has been roped in for a pivotal role in the film.

There’s a big surprise too, but Gaurang wants it to be just that -- a surprise -- when people watch the film. Okay, let’s give you a clue: The icon will enact one of the key roles in the enterprise.

What’s HAPPY BIRTHDAY all about? “All I can reveal right now is its tagline -- ‘Those who don’t believe in magic, will never find it’,” he smiles. So it’s all about magic? “Not at all! It’s a new genre, completely commercial, a complete dhamaal,” he isn’t in the mood to divulge more.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY begins shooting early next year and the makers are hopeful of releasing it in August 2007. Vishal-Shekhar are scoring its music.

I'm blessed, humbled and thrilled: Aishwarya Rai

The gorgeous Aishwarya Rai talks about her forthcoming releases and Abhishek Bachchan .

In a very amiable mood, as she unveiled Nakshatra’s new range of diamonds in a suburban Mumbai hotel earlier this week, Ash also spoke about her passion for the precious stone, her fluctuating weight.

On giving Bollywood a miss for almost a year, Ash is back with three big-budget releases: Umrao Jaan , Dhoom 2 and Guru .

On why people are crazy about Ash even though many of her films have bombed at the box office, Ash said, “It is wonderful to be loved and I’m blessed, humbled and thrilled. My job is my passion and I think people just appreciate that.”

On being busy of late, the former Miss World said, “I travelled extensively for the last one year and it’s probably the longest interval that I’ve been away from home. Since the last couple of years, my producers have been following a strict start-to-finish schedule of shooting, which meant long spells at locations.”

Talking about her much publicized fitness regime for ‘Dhoom 2’, Ash said, “‘The Dhoom 2’ schedule was split up into two parts. In the mean time, we had to complete ‘Guru’, for which I had to put on weight. When the shooting for ‘Dhoom 2’ resumed, I followed a fitness regime for about three weeks. I’m fortunate that my body responded to it. I don’t believe in strict dieting and starvation and have always indulged my sweet tooth.”

Talking about her forthcoming films Ash stated, “I want to reiterate that ‘Umrao Jaan’ is not just the story of a bygone era. It’s what so many girls go through even now. What I like most about ‘Dhoom 2’ is the way the mannerisms of the characters have brought out. The characters are not just modern, hot and racy.

On the general perception about Indian films in the international arena, Ash said, “There is immense curiosity and familiarity about our films. They are not just talking about the duration of our films and our musicals, but also about the content of our films.”

And last but not the least, Ash had this to say about Abhishek: “It’s because you are seeing us together on screen more often that people think there is something more to our professional relationship. Hrithik Roshan and Abhishek are the two actors with whom I’m paired in all my forthcoming releases.”

Aishwarya Rai`s different strokes

Subtlety, strength and commitment are the traits Aishwarya Rai believes she shares with Nakshatra diamond jewellery, a brand she has been associated with for about six years. Elegantly dressed in a black and silver sari, she maintained a cheerful mood before unveiling the new collection for the season.

Accompanied by her mother Vrinda Rai and business manager Hari Singh, Rai belies the belief that Indian actresses cannot soar once they touch 30. Proof of that are her diverse roles in equally varied films, beginning with JP Dutta’s Umrao Jaan which releases next month, after which she will be seen in Dhoom 2 and Guru.

The role of the courtesan is one every actress would covet. But Rai is “not apprehensive about comparisons because I have been down that road before with Devdas.”

She further adds, “It’s an honour for me to be chosen from among my fraternity to play a role so beautifully and convincingly essayed by the amazing Rekha. I’m thankful to JP saab for giving me the opportunity of portraying Umrao Jaan.”

Considering that she’s known to be selective about her work, but also to be exceedingly well prepared when she arrives on sets, what preparations did she make to portray Umrao Jaan?

“The credit for research goes to JP saab,” she says. “He’s a wonderful director and a visionary. Besides, he has a great understanding of music, as is evident in the way he has used it in the film.”

Keeping in mind Dutta’s male-dominated war films like Border, Refugee and LOC, was he a strict disciplinarian on her sets or did he pamper her during filming? “I knew that was coming,” she says before dismissing both.

“In fact Shabanaji, Ayesha Jhulka, Divya Dutta, Himaniji (Shivpuri) and I used to tease JP saab about it. But even in his male-dominated films, as you call them, women had strong characters and important roles to play.”

On a final note, one can’t resist asking her when her special diamond ring is due. Rai bursts into laughter and replies: “That’s for you to tell me. You guys know better.”

Ash-Abhishek in Yash Raj's next?

The audience will perhaps have an overdose of Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan this year. They have a spate of films lined up. They will soon be seen in UMRAO JAAN, DHOOM 2, GURU and SARKAR 2. Looks like the smashing jodi is all set to rule hearts this Diwali. Well not only that, their fans are in for yet another treat! If the grapevine is to be believed, they have signed another film together. Yash Raj's next venture to be directed by an in-house debutant will see them sizzle again. However Aishwarya's Business Manager, Harii Singh said that he was not aware of any such news.

But for now keep your eyes glued to UMRAO JAAN and DHOOM 2 that has them in diametrically different looks!

Incidentally Abhishek Bachchan has been roped in as the brand ambassador for BIG FM Chennai, radio station. The ADAG Adlabs radio venture will take off in Chennai and Hyderabad next week. South starlet Asin is the female brand ambassador.

Aishwarya, Abhishek speak cautiously about their relationship!

Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan have kept their fans guessing whether the relationship between them is just friendship or something more.

Trust Aishwarya to be tightlipped and Abhishek to be diplomatic when answering the questions regarding their relationship. In a recent TV interview, the two spoke about each other, but in very cautiously chosen words.

Ash said she and Abhi have grown to be 'very good friends' who are 'very comfortable working with each other'. Ash added that she shares 'a wonderful camaraderie' with Abhishek.

Abhishek, on the other hand, called Ash 'a very close friend' with whom 'it is always a pleasure to work.'

He also took a jab at the media by insisting that the private lives of actors should be left to themselves and should not become grist for rumour mills.

Ash and Abhi will soon be seen in two movies : J P Dutta's 'Umrao Jaan' and Mani Ratnam's 'Guru'. They will also work together in Ram Gopal Varma's 'Sarkar 2'.

Aishwariya Rai on Dhoom 2

Two films, two completely different roles. One a courtesan, and the other an ambitious 21st century woman with shades of grey. We are talking about Aishwarya Rai in ‘Umrao Jaan’ and in ‘Dhoom 2’. The sequel of ‘Dhoom’ has an ensemble cast where Rai will be seen playing lady love to Hrithik Roshan.

“It’s the kind of character I have never essayed before. Sunehiri, my character in the film, is distinctly different from any other character you have seen me play. That’s what makes her exciting to me,” says Aishwariya.

However, having a toned body was the one thing that was most crucial in an action packed movie like Dhoom 2, and this definitely drove the otherwise not very conscious miss Rai to go and tone up.

“For the first time in my life, I went through a bit of a fitness regime. Contrary to popular belief, right since modeling, to the (Miss World) title, to films, I have never been a fitness freak or exercised,” said the former Miss World.

Looking good is definitely one of the many reasons that draw the crowds, and a mantra that the already beautiful actress has stuck too.

Coming Soon: A season full of Ash!

Aishwarya Rai may have lost Sexiest Aisan Woman crown to Priyanka Chopra but millions of hearts still skip the beat when Ash dazzles on silverscreen.

Come November and the talented actress would be seen in two strikingly different avtaars in Dhoom 2 and Umrao Jaan. Interestingly, Aishwarya’s look in Umrao Jaan is completely opposite of her suave and slick avtaar in Dhoom 2.

If she’s looking like a million bucks in the exquisitely designed costumes as Umrao, she’s at her sizzling best in the skimpily clad outfits in Yash Raj Film's sequel.

Anna Singh who designed clothes for the actress in Dutta's epic tells, "To dress Ash is the ultimate dream because her beauty supersedes the most stunning creation. Her costumes matched the phases of her life—from being a simple girl to the glam mujrewali Umrao Jaan Ada to her being heartbroken and finally growing old."

Even though she has not had a big hit film in a long time, yet the actress has her own high brand value. Another interesting thing is that both the films have Abhishekh Bachchan. If he’s romancing her in Umrao Jaan, he’d be seen chasing her in Dhoom 2.

The two will be also be seen together in Mani Ratnam’s Guru and Sarkar 2.

Sarkar 2’ will also be the second film to bring Amitabh Bachchan , Abhishek and Aishwarya together on the big screen. The trio previously jammed together for the song “Kajra Re” in the last year’s hit Bunty Aur Babli.

In Ramu’s film, however, their roles will be properly fleshed out. It'll show Abhishek becoming the head of the clan. Amitabh will have relatively lesser footage. Aishwarya will play the woman who loves Abhi and opposes his involvement in the underworld activities.

But will they create the Kajra Re magic again only time will tell....

Abhishek Is Very Clued-in: Ash Jaan

“Abhishek is very clued-in,” said Aishwarya Rai at the Music Launch of her Big Ticket Period extravaganza ‘Umrao Jaan’ in a plush Mumbai hotel.

It was after a long wait of eight months that Ash was coming before the Media Bazaar. Dressed in a creamy-white-golden saree, she looked svelte in that Dhoom physique and Nakshatra Diamond smile.

Abhishek’s absence was more than made up by his illustrious Dad Amitabh Bachchan who graced the occasion with élan. And as the ‘Kajra Re’ duo hugged warmly, the shutterbugs went in a dizzy….One more….They screamed….

So guys, if you are reading all this in a management school in Australia or UK and are a super Hindi filmi buff, then I can safely say…All this Jhakaas Nights happen only in Mumbai. The city rocks. In spite of every thing. Well, talking about the night of music and classical tastes, ‘Umrao Jaan’ is one of the most eagerly awaited films of the year. And considering it’s trying to match the sheen of Muzaffar Ali’s classic a good twenty five years ago, all eyes-n-ears are eager to dole out their bit of criticism-n-praise.

Lemme give you the dope on the who’s-who present that eventful night. Well, apart from AB Senior and Ash (They unconsciously competed with who gets more flashbulbs), there was loudmouthed director J P Dutta (Dude, chill a bit, why do you have to take yourself so seriously), his wife actress of yesteryears Bindiya Goswami, Shabana Azmi (Looking lovely in a peacock colour saree…But alas she just couldn’t handle the cameras hogging Ash while she was left with a stray limelight on her face in the grim night), Lyricist Javed Akhtar (Jovial as ever), Lata Mangeshkar (She preferred to keep quiet but her presence is terrific), volatile music composer Anu Malik (Must say, the guy is a paragon of positive energy), the managing director of T-Series Bhushan Kumar (Take my word, this success story is very humble…I literally bumped into him unconsciously…But he just smiled back without a trace of indignation) and dress designer Anna Singh (Her costumes are gorgeous but she seemed to be in a bad mood that day). One could also trace Divya Dutta, Puru Raj Kumar, Alka Yagnik and Parikshit Sahni other than a deluge of media force.

The promos of ‘Umrao Jaan’ were shown on a big screen while the set by Bijon Dasgupta specially created in the Hotel premises were Grand. Now, it would be improper to compare the two ‘Umrao Jaan’s’. For they represent two different generations and mindsets. As for the music of the film, when you compare it with the present lot, it’s most certainly original. The semi classical raag based songs soulfully sung by Alka Yagnik and Sonu Nigam do evoke curiosity and interest. It remains to be seen whether it manages to withstand the passage of time that the earlier version so successfully achieved.

‘Umrao Jaan’ may just steal the thunder from ‘Don’ and ‘Jaaneman’ due to the super chemistry between Ash and Aby Baby. It’s time to wait and watch.

Aishwarya surpasses J.P Dutta's expectations

J.P Dutta is known for making films that he's passionate about. Be it BORDER, REFUGEE, LOC KARGIL, BATWARA, HATHYAR etc. Though his films are male-oriented, the prolific director has always portrayed women in a dignified manner. He has innate respect for women. He has never used women in a cheap manner merely to woo the audience and his magnum opus UMRAO JAAN also endorses this fact. It's about the young Amiran who was sold into flesh trade at a very tender age of 9 years.

He is more than happy with Aishwarya Rai's performance and cannot stop raving about her. Her role is not that of a sensuous courtesan but he has sensitively depicted the story of a young girl who is a victim of the flesh trade. He was looking for someone who'd bring alive Amiran's character and his search ended with the beautiful Aishwarya Rai. He said that Aishwarya had that enchanting and enigmatic quality and she has surpassed all his expectations.

What makes UMRAO JAAN intriguing is the fact that several generations and filmmakers have tried to recreate the magic of UMRAO JAAN, (his being the 4th film). J.P is a stickler for perfection, which reflects in all his films. He used to brief his wife Bindya and designer Anna about the minutest details regarding costumes and colour coordination etc. The colour of the costumes, the fabric etc everything had to be just perfect. The colours used are completely in harmony with the surroundings. The entire look of the film is magnificent, the costumes are elegant and those who've heard the music are completely smitten by it. The music is very melodious and soulful. It infact marks the return of melody in music. Something the audience has not witnessed since a long time.

Umrao Jaan is not a remake but an adaptation

Isn't Aishwarya Rai looking simply stunning in this still from JP Dutta's magnanimous opus Umrao Jaan.

While the general notion is that JP Dutta's film is remake of Muzzaffar Ali's 1981 film by the same name starring Rekha, the fact is not entirely true. Rather than a remake, JP Dutta's film is an adaptation.

Mirza Muhammad Hadi Ruswa had originally written the novel by the title of UMRA-O-JAAN-E-ADA in the 19th century. This novel is one of the foremost literatures in Urdu and was published in the year 1899 by Mahadeo Prasad, Publishers of Lucknow.

Ever since then the novel has a quality that has inspired many generations of film-makers to recreate the enigmatic character of Umrao Jaan. And interestingly neither Muzzaffar Ali's nor JP Dutta's version is the first cinematic adaptation of the classic literature. Other films already made on the novel include Zindagi Aur Toofan and Mehendi.

More interestingly even before these films, someone else had started making a film on this novel. And the person was none other than OP Dutta, father of JP Dutta. In the 50's, O.P.Dutta was the first person to start a film on Umrao Jaan starring the then popular actress Nimmi. Unfortunately that film could not be completed.

So in a way by making this film J P Dutta has lived his father's dream.

Ash’s ‘Salaam’ This Sunday

Ash may be looking hot in the promos of ‘Dhoom 2’ but the film that she is banking on in a big way is J P Dutta’s ‘Umrao Jaan’ an adaptation of the famous Urdu Novel by Rusva. Obviously the comparisons with Rekha will be there for she has already immortalized Umrao in Muzaffar Ali’s Magnum Opus. And the first biggest test is this Sunday when the first song ‘Salaam’ from the music album of new ‘Umrao Jaan’ will start airing on the small screen.

It has been confirmed that ‘Umrao Jaan’ is all set to release on November 13th and it shall be avoiding the collision course with ‘Don’ and ‘Jaanemann’. Khayyam’s music in the first version is the stuff of classics. It remains to be seen how good Anu Malik’s score is. What’s your take….Who makes a better Umrao….Ash or Rekha? Do send in your feedback to us….

Hrithik, Aishwarya in a Music Video for Dhoom 2?

They started the trend of music videos in films. Now are they doing it again? Rumors are rife that Sanjay Gadhvi’s highly awaited Dhoom 2, which is under the Yashraj banner, will have a promotional music video just like Dhoom had which featured Tata Young along with the lead male stars of the film. The music video was directed by Arjun Sablok.

According to sources in the industry, this time too Yashraj have roped in Arjun Sablok to direct a music video for Dhoom 2. The video will have Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai. Arjun Sablok has previously directed films like Na Tum Jaano Na Hum and Neal n Nikki.

Aishwarya Rai to promote 'Provoked' in London

Aishwarya Rai ’s much awaited film Provoked is ready to hit the theatres soon.

Before the film’s release, Ash will go to London in the third week of September to promote the movie. She is expected there on Sept 18 to address the British media and answer questions relating to the movie and her role in it.

‘Provoked’, directed by Jagmohan Mundhra , is the true story of a Punjabi woman, Kiranjit Ahluwalia, who faced physical, sexual and mental abuse at the hands of her husband for ten years. After years of suffering, she eventually killed her husband and then was sent to jail. While Kiranjit was behind bars serving her sentence, a group of social workers called the Southhall Black Sisters organized rallies and protests following which the British judicial system reprieved Kiranjit’s punishment.

Aishwarya is keen to rope in the real Kiranjit Ahluwalia for the movie’s promotion. Kiranjit accompanied the film’s crew at its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May this year.

Ash has often been criticized in the media for being reluctant to promote her films. She hardly took out enough time to promote her last release Mistress Of Spices , which bombed big time at the box-office.

However, producer J. Murli Manohar says he is very happy that Ash will be coming to London to promote ‘Provoked’. He also confirms that Ash will dub for the movie’s Hindi version. The Tamil and Telugu versions would be dubbed by other artists.

However, before leaving for England to promote the film, Ash will be busy in her other assignments. She will shoot a song with Hrithik Roshan for Dhoom 2 . She will also shoot an ad campaign in Barcelona.

Aishwarya stops Dubai's traffic

Dubai came to a standstill when Bollywood superstar Aishwarya Rai was shooting for an advertisement film of a well-known soap brand.

Dubai traffic went out of gear as shooting caused serious traffic snarls on the Emirate's major arterial road Sheikh Zayed Road yesterday during the day-long shoot for Lux International.

The shooting scene involved a group of young boys and girls dancing through the streets as Rai walked past them wearing a floral frock flashing a smile.

Large groups of fans and onlookers gathered to catch a glimpse of the actress who was totally relaxed when the camera rolled while angry motorists blared their horns.

Bollywood Director Rohan Sippy, who directed the ad film, said an international crew handled the entire project.

Rai's 'global appeal' made her the obvious choice for the project, said the organisers.

See what is Ash doing in Hollywood

We don't know about Bollywood but Aishwarya Rai's fledgling Hollywood career is likely to receive a substantial boost with the release of the period drama The Last Legion on 19 Jan 2007.

The film produced by Dino De Laurentiis Productions stars Colin Firth, Ben Kingsley, Aishwarya Rai, Peter Mullan, Kevin McKidd and Thomas Sangster.

To be distributed by MGM it is based on Valerio Massimo Mandredi's novel of the same name and is part history and part legend. The screen play is set against the backdrop of the fall of Rome in 476AD.

Immediately following the coronation of twelve-year-old Romulus Augustus (Thomas Sangster) as the new emperor of the Roman Empire Barbarian army storm and overrun the city of Rome. They capture Romulus and his mentor Ambrosinus (Ben Kingsley) and hold them captive in the island fortress of Capri.

Amidst the handful of legionnaires that survive the storming and the ensuing slaughter is Aurelius (Colin Firth) who had been charged with the safety of the new emperor by his father before he was killed at the hands of the Barbarians.

On learning that the Byzantine Empire will give Romulus sanctuary Aurelius, accompanied by a small group of faithful warriors, embarks on a journey to rescue Romulus. Amidst the group is a black-clad Byzantine warrior. During the journey, Aurelius discovers what lies behind the black clothing-a young, beautiful woman called Mira (Aishwarya Rai).

'Dhoom 2' director full of praise for Aishwarya Rai

That the gorgeous Aishwarya Rai was asked to lose some weight by the makers of Dhoom 2 is old news.

The dedicated and committed professional that she is, Ash not only lost that extra weight, but also toned up her body.

And if that was not enough, Ash’s breathtaking stunts, some along with Hrithik Roshan , has director Sanjay Gadhvi rooting for her.

According to Gadhvi, Ash made acrobatic assertions during the making of ‘Dhoom 2’ and trained for months for the action sequences in the film.

Gadhvi told a newspaper recently, “Ash has a lot of guts. She has done some awesome stunts in the film. She did power yoga for two months and has a perfectly toned body.”

The sequel of Dhoom , ‘Dhoom 2’ has Ash and Hrithik playing thieves chased by cops played by Abhishek Bachchan and Bipasha Basu , aided by Uday Chopra .

The movie, filmed in Namibia, South Africa and India is scheduled to release on November 24, 2006.

No one has seen Aishwarya like this

As the release date of J.P. Dutta's "Umrao Jaan" nears, TV channels, newspapers and magazines seem to be falling over each other to present the first images of Aishwarya Rai from the film.

"We are inundated by calls from all the newspapers and channels for Aishwarya's pictures from 'Umrao Jaan'," said a source from Dutta's camp.

Dutta has kept Aishwarya's new avatar under wraps.

"So far Aishwarya has played a modern woman in films except in 'Devdas' where people liked her a lot. They are waiting to see her as the courtesan Umrao Jaan. People in the trade are positive about the film because of Dutta," said Delhi-based distributor Sanjay Mehta.

"Aishwarya is not known as a bankable actor. People think of her as wooden. She can't emote. But Dutta is not only a good director, he is also a good technician. He knows how to extract work from his artist. We are confident that Aishwarya must have played the role convincingly," he added.

Mehta couldn't be more right -- Dutta had put Aishwarya under rigorous training so she could play the role made famous by Rekha in the original.

"People are also curious to see Aishwarya and Abhishek Bachchan's chemistry on screen," added Mehta.

The obvious question is whether Aishwarya can ever match up to Rekha?

Said Dutta: "Aishwarya has given her best to the film."

Dutta has gone into meticulous detail in costumes, jewellery and the look of the period film in terms of buildings and indoors too. He has used real jewellery for Aishwarya, Abhishek and other members of the main cast.

He has relied heavily on Mirza Mohammed Haadi Ruswa's novel "Umrao Jaan" to add authenticity.

"He gave the minutest details to Anna Singh and his wife Bindiya. They have carried out his vision exactly the way Dutta wanted it to be," said an insider.

In 1981, Muzaffar Ali directed the first screen adaptation of Ruswa's book. It was a masterpiece and Rekha's performance as an emotionally unfulfilled courtesan was appreciated with a National Award.

"Umrao Jaan", which marks Dutta's comeback after his damp squib "LOC Kargil", is said to be his first women-centric film.

Dutta defends himself and says he has always given a lot of dignity to women in his films be it Smita Patil in "Ghulami", Dimple in "Batwara", Meenakshi Sheshadri in "Kshatriya" or Kareena Kapoor in "Refugee" -- all were strong, dynamic women.

"All my films have been on weapons, war and patriotism, so, a lot of people feel I make male oriented films."

"Umrao Jaan" made on a budget of Rs.200 million was shot mainly in Jaipur. It also stars Shabana Azmi, Suniel Shetty, Arshad Warsi and Kulbhushan Kharbanda.

If Asha Bhonsle was the voice of Rekha, Alka Yagnik will sing for Aishwarya Rai. Javed Akhtar has penned the songs for this classic tale and Anu Malik has composed it. Malik's daughter Anmol is learnt to have lent her voice to a young Aishwarya in the film.

'Aishwaya totally shocked me'

Bollywood charmer Hrithik Roshan has a reputation for being an exacting, diligent actor who does all his own stunts. But he didn't make the cut with Bollywood's most famous face, Aishwarya Rai.

He says he fell short during their recent shoot for the action thriller "Dhoom2."

"I was quite shocked to see the kind of intelligence she lends to her characters,'' he told a leading newspaper. "It was quite a task matching up to the world's most beautiful face."

Colleagues often describe Roshan as a perfectionist and the actor said he had "loosened up this time and was quite chilled out."

But while filming the cops-and-robbers flick, "slowly and steadily, she made me aware of the fact that I was having a bit too much fun with the role and should start taking it more seriously."

Roshan plays a thief in "Dhoom2," which also stars Abhishek Bachchan, Rai and Bipasha Basu.

He plans to go one up on Rai when they begin shooting next month for a period romance "Jodha-Akbar," a 16th century love story between a Muslim emperor and a Hindu princess.

"This time in 'Jodha-Akbar' I will make sure that I take my character very seriously, and turn the tables on her so that she will be inspired by me, just as I was by her in Dhoom2."

Umrao Jaan - Really coming on October 20th?

Less than a couple of months to go and October 20th finds itself to be a much discussed dates in the coming days!

Week of Diwali always brings with it an unprecedented hype about the movies releasing in the closest Friday. 2 years back there was one of the most interesting clash of Veer Zaara [superhit], Aitraaz [hit], Mughal-E-Azam [hit] and Naach [flop]. Last year too there were three films that released in the same period - 'Garam Masala' [hit], 'Shaadi No. 1' [below average] and 'Kyun Ki' [flop]. This year the scene is bigger and better with both 'Don - The Chase Begins Again' and 'Jaan-E-Mann' firmly placed to fight amongst them, though indications are that both should prove to be big hits.

While Neeraj Vora directed Arjun Rampal-Dia Mirza starrer 'Familywala' doesn't really seem to be a probable release on the same day due to tough competition, one is not sure about the release of 'Umrao Jaan'. Though there have been speculations galore during last 48 hours about its actual release day [while there were murmurs about film being postponed, film maker J.P. Dutta insists it is indeed October 20th], one wonders about the impact of the decision!

It's a known fact today that the film's opening week holds most weight [in fact more than 50% of the collections from an entire run come from first week itself for a biggie]! For this the magic formula is to flood the market with as many prints as possible. Gone are the days when 300+ prints were considered good. Now it is the 500+ count that drives the show. With neither 'Don' nor 'Jaan-E-Mann' being the kind of flicks that would settle for anything less than 500 each, where does that leave 'Umrao Jaan' for which even the publicity has not yet begun and also doesn't really boast of any hype or buzz whatsoever?

If Dutta is waiting for some publicity blitzkrieg to begin with a splash then well, that splash needs to happen sooner than later. In an age of on-your-face-publicity where one just can't afford to miss a single opportunity to reach out to the audience, just 7 more weeks to go for a film's release without any news is quite surprising.

This brings one to the question if 'Umrao Jaan' is indeed releasing on October 20th? And even if it does, would it come on the number of prints that could take it past the safety mark in a couple of weeks itself?

Or would the movie create more impact if it releases a couple of weeks after 'Diwali', though before 'Dhoom 2' that arrives on November 24th to avoid a clash?

In a game of wait and watch, this indeed is becoming a painful, though interesting watch!

‘Umrao Jaan’ not postponed

The gossip mills are working overtime. Their latest ‘creation’ is that J.P. Dutta has postponed the release date of his Abhishek-Ash starrer UMRAO JAAN from October 20 to November 24 because J.P. didn’t want to clash with the two biggies [DON, JAAN-E-MANN] that are slated for release on October 20, the Diwali/Idd week.

“What rubbish!” J.P.’s tone says it all, “It’s all speculation. I haven’t postponed UMRAO JAAN, nor will I do so. Like I said earlier, the Idd week is crucial for my film. And why should I postpone my film to a latter date? I have already completed the film, so why delay it? October 20 is the date for UMRAO JAAN.”

That clears it: It’s DON versus JAAN-E-MANN versus UMRAO JAAN this Diwali/Idd.

Promo review - Dhoom 2

Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz

Is it going to be the biggest sequel of all?

After 'Phir Hera Pheri' went on surpass the business of 'Hera Pheri' by leaps and bounds, 'Krrish' turned out to be one of the top blockbusters of all times and hence in process broke the records set by 'Koi..Mil Gaya'. While 'Lage Raho Munnabhai' is looking set to be the third sequel success in quick time, 'Dhoom 2' [now popularly known as D2] too is turning out to be yet another exciting and high adrenaline drive from the makers of the original 'Dhoom'.

If having Abhishek Bachchan in the lead was not enough, the sequel now also stars Hrithik Roshan, Aishwarya Rai and Bipasha Basu as the added attractions with the usual suspect Uday Chopra completing the mega starcast of the film. With the coming together of Yash Raj Films and Sanjay Gadhvi, the director of 'Dhoom', expectations are only sky high from the film. Also with Hrithik having scaled the heights of action with 'Krrish', it is but natural to expect a much BETTER, a much BIGGER and a much GRANDEUR affair from D2.

With 3 months to go before the release of the film, Yash Raj Films in there true tradition have unveiled the promo of the film along with the screening of 'Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna' that has been distributed by them. And doesn't the promo just promise a rollicking ride of your lifetime ahead?

This 100 second promo of D2 begins with an announcement of a female newsreader in the background who speculates over the next line of action of this big time thief/robber! A couple of shots later that show some glimpses of some cool gadgets, a larger than life aerial view of a full length train in the middle of a desert successfully manages to bring you on the edge of your seats. A razor sharp shot of a man tied to ropes while skating along with a train running at a speed on the upwards of at least 100 km/hours [yes, you read it right] is enough to set the adrenaline rushing for any normal living soul!

After setting the context of this actioner in 25 seconds flat, it's time to introduce the 'cool' characters of the film. A sound of whistle with trademark Pritam beats brings Hrithik Roshan at the center of the frame who is shown walking with a carelessly unbuttoned blue shirt and a white vest underneath! Look of the film remains blue throughout when Abhishek Bachchan is the next to come as he walks in a blue outfit in a place that resembles a railway platform. Aishwarya's deep neck blue top is surely going to invite a lot of sighs as she looks western'chic while Uday Chopra prefers to go topless with outstretched arms inviting love with twinkle in his eyes. Bipasha is the last to appear and she does well to hold herself amongst the crowd with a skin hugging top and a gun holster to boost, hence giving herself a very western look.

Introductions over and there is time for some real action to begin that starts with Hrithik Roshan skating in black leather outfits while beating the fast moving traffic behind. Rearranged version of the title song 'Dhoom Machale' forms the part of the background score as everyone from Uday, Abhishek to Hrithik join the action on road [bikes] and water [skate boats]. It's not just the action but a lot of eye candy that keeps you glued to the screen with an arrival of Bipasha Basu in a two piece striped bikini on a beach. Ash too is not far behind as she dances along in a club while attired in mini. There are some more song'n'dance shots to follow that feature the trio of male leads.

A minute into the promo and mood shifts to high voltage drama with Abhishek looking forward to picking up the challenge. The words uttered by him ['Tumse Milke Bahaut Maza Aayega...we will have fun'] set the ball rolling with shots of some daredevil action filling in the gaps between his sentences. A jump atop the train through a glider followed by a cool looking Hrithik getting ready for his plan of action in his gadget laden lab bring the action back in form. The song in the background continuous as well with a gravity defying fight amongst the two men at the top of the train. But the cake is taken by a sequence where Hrithik is gliding once again on the road, this time doing so under a large carrier truck. Some more gadget assisted stunts follow before Abhishek and Uday stamp their authority with a gun each pointed towards the frame.

Well, is that all? Certainly not, as indicated by Hrithik when he conveys the message to Ash - "The Game Is Not Over"! Check out for the heart stopping glimpses of a collage of shots that feature the two hanging down steep mountains, a sequence that has never before attempted in an Indian movie before.

One thing is clear after the promo ends - the film is going to put Allan Amin, the action director of the film, firmly on the map of International class action choreographers. In spite of all the big names involved with the film, 'D2' seems to be an Allan Amin film all the way.

The wait should be worth it for this sure shot success in the making that arrives all over on November 24th!

Hrithik sexier than Aishwarya in Dhoom 2

Radiosargam

Hrithik Roshan is dressed in drag for a few minutes in the film Dhoom 2.

Hrithik has various get ups and he does look as sexy as Aishwarya Rai and Bipasha Basu in the film in that get up.

With the news about the alleged molestation of Bipasha Basu in the US during the Independence Day Parade filtering in, Hrithik should be more careful about men around when he dresses up in such sexy attires.

null
Jokes apart, Riteish Deshmukh too looked sexy enough when we saw him dressed in drag getting married to Anupam Kher on one hand and Koena Mitra on the other in the film Apna Sapna Money Money. Earlier heroes took away roles of the villains and comedians like Om Puri and Johnny Lever.

Now they are taking over the heroines' roles as well.

Hrithik & Aishwarya film has budget of 37 crores

After working together, on 'Swades', UTV Motion Pictures, and Ashutosh Gowariker Production, have again come together to produce, the magna opus love story, "Jodha Akhbar"..

Starring - Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai in lead roles,, the film is set in 16th century Mughal period,, and looks in to the alliance of a Mughal leader and a Rajput princess.. Ronnie Screwvala and Ashutosh Gowariker are both very excited about working together. Says Ronnie Screwvala, - "We were always clear that, we would work together again. Its was a just a question of when and how." Adds Ashutosh Gowariker, - "I had a very fixed idea and wanted the right backing for the project.

Film is not only about production, but about overall packaging, positioning, marketing and distribution of the film." Ashutosh says, - "the idea has been with me, since I completed Lagaan… but, I decide to work on Swades as this film needed more research. Haider Ali Sahib is helping me with the research of the film. I am really excited about the love story angle.

I have never made a love story before… we all take it for granted that Salim was born from Jodha and Akhbar's marriage, but no one knows how their love came in to being… it's a legendary love story that is untold till date. And I strongly feel that everyone will be to connect to the emotion of love. It's a modern film set in historical times. Not a period movie.

I am not showing history, I am depicting emotions. We are currently doing thorough research to maintain the authenticity of Akhbar's character… While writing the story the images that came to mind were only two people warrior like Hrithik and the beauty of Ash... it was them that evolved into my mind and took shape of Akhbar and Jodha."

When Aishwarya Rai cancelled 'Dhoom 2' shoot

By ApunKaChoice

The gorgeous Aishwarya Rai recently cancelled her Dhoom 2 shoot in which she stars opposite Hrithik Roshan .

And the reason for Ash doing so was very personal and very genuine as her father Krishnaraj Rai was hospitalized for gangrene in intestines. He was admitted to the Hinduja hospital in Mumbai.

Ash being the devoted daughter that she is, put all assignments on hold and rushed to be with him.

Ash was in the middle of her shoot for ‘Dhoom 2’ in South Africa. However, she came back as soon as she heard of her dad’s illness.

Krishnaraj Rai had a stomachache and had been throwing up. He was taken to a hospital where ultrasound and city scan tests were done. A minor operation was done. He is much better now and recuperating under a team of expert doctors.

Ash and her mother Vrinda were with Krishnaraj through the night. Ash left the hospital next morning after the doctors declared him to be out of danger.

‘Dhoom 2’, the sequel of Dhoom , has Ash and Hrithik playing swanky crooks being chased by cops played by Abhishek Bachchan and Bipasha Basu aided by Uday Chopra .

One of the most eagerly awaited films, ‘Dhoom 2’ is scheduled to release on November 24, 2006.

DHOOM 2 back with a bigger 'dhoom'

glamsham

The eye-catching, mind boggling promo of Aditya Chopra's DHOOM 2 is really a short visual treat. The DHOOM clan is back with a bang, with Aishwarya Rai and Bipasha Basu making it even more exciting. They set the screen ablaze with their stunning appearances and that too in diametrically diverse avatars. The breath-takingly beautiful Aishwarya has successfully thrown away that extra flab and looks svelte and attractive. Watch out for Bipasha donning that sexy bikini with oomph and aplomb. Hrithik Roshan roller-skating act and the rocking stunts makes the film very lively and speedy. The cliff sequence towards the end is truly incredible and very well executed. Abhishek Bachchan plays a cop again and will definitely win hearts with his style and panache. The impish Uday Chopra is seen baring his chest and smiling to glory, promising loads of entertainment again.

These guys are back with a bigger dhoom and it definitely looks like a bigger hit to sweep you off your feet's this November.

Hrithik-Ash Super Hot in Dhoom 2 Promo

Faridoon Shahryar, IndiaGlitz

It was rush-of-blood as the whole auditorium huddled together to watch Karan Johar’s magnum opus ‘Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna’ in a suburban multiplex in Mumbai. The popcorns were ripe-with-rich-smell and the colas were cool-with-anticipation (In spite of the hullabaloo surrounding the pesticides in the cola drinks multiplex economy heavily depends on the sales of these beverages). Right before the 22 reel largely mounted KANK was about to start, there was a pleasant surprise in the form of a taut trailer of Sanjay Gadhvi’s ‘Dhoom 2’.

I must say Hrithik Roshan looks Uber Cool. And even though I am not a big fan of Aishwarya Rai, this Miss World is looking a Super Hot Babe in this Aditya Chopra lavishly produced style flick. She has worn delectable mini skirts and her sinuous curves are worth a million Sighs-n-Aahs. The other body to die-for layered along with her is that of Hrithik Roshan. This trendy hair cut adorned delicious-stud surrounded by state-of-the-art gizmos, masterminds the ultimate crimes with a vicious-smile-on-his-face. Bipasha, Abhishek and Uday are looking their part. But if the promos are anything to go by then, it’s a Hrithik-Ash film all the way, even though they are playing negative characters.

IndiaGlitz says: What great timing to release the promos of one of the most eagerly sought after film. Hats off to Yashraj!

More bikini show in Dhoom 2

Dhoom 2 is what everyone wants to know about. The sequel to the 2004 hit Dhoom, this film will also be full of action, style and hot women. And here’s some exclusive dope on the film. Earlier, there was a buzz that Aishwarya Rai will be seen in a bikini in the film. Now, adding to it, we have known that even Bipasha Basu will be sporting a bikini in Dhoom 2.

Besides, the promo of Dhoom 2, which will be going live on Indiafm.com very soon, ends with a scene where Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai jump from a very high mountain cliff. Looking at the shot we could surely say that nothing like this has been seen in an Indian film before. Also, the overall promo looks very sleek and has an international look. Now, if the promo itself is so promising, we can’t wait to see how the movie is going to be like.

More tough times for Ash

SantaBanta

Doctors said he suffered from some gastro-intestinal problem and was operated upon Thursday night. Later, he was shifted to the intensive care unit and is under observation.

Abhishek-Ash all the way this winter

Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz

As soon as Q4 of year 2006 begins, it would be time for fans of Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai to rejoice. That's because they would be seen together in not one, not two but as many as three flicks.

From October onwards, practically every month there is a Abhishek Bachchan-Aishwarya Rai film lined up. First to come would be J.P. Dutta's take on 'Umrao Jaan' that releases this Diwali/Eid on October 20th. The film would be facing the might of Salman-Akshay-Preity starrer 'Jaaneman' and King Khan's 'Don'.

Exactly a month later the two would be seen in 'Dhoom 2'. Since Ash is paired opposite Hrithik Rishan in the film, it is uncertain if Abhi-Ash would have any scenes together. Still, going by their off screen liaison, it is expected that the two to have a face off. Last but not the least, after a gap of 4 more weeks, Mani Ratnam's 'Guru' would arrive that has the two playing a couple surviving the test of times.

'Umrao Jaan', 'Dhoom 2' and 'Guru' - there is a lot of variety to catch up for Abhishek-Ash fans this winter!
